Blood drive comes to Hilo

Blood drive comes to Hilo

“Save our summer — the need for blood doesn’t take a vacation.”

That’s the theme of the Blood Bank of Hawaii’s summer blood drive, co-sponsored by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The drive continues in Hilo from 7 to 11:45 a.m. July 24 at the church’s Hilo Stake Cultural Hall, 1373 Kilauea Ave.

Those who donate blood through Sept. 7 can enter to win a four-night, five-day Disneyland getaway, which includes airfare, hotel and park passes for a family of four.

Appointments are recommended. Call 1-800-372-9966 or 808-348-1092. Walk ins are accepted, time slots may be limited. For more information, visit www.bbh.org.

Taste of Hilo tickets on sale

The Japanese Chamber of Commerce announces that tickets are on sale for the 17th annual Taste of Hilo from 1-3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 18, at the Sangha Hall.

The Taste of Hilo annually features more than 35 restaurants, chefs, dessert patisseries and beverage distributors, who provide their talents, ingredients and staff to make this annual event a success.

A portion of event proceeds support Hawaii Community College.

Tickets are $50 in advance, $65 at the door, subject to availability. Advance tickets are available by calling the JCC at 934-0177 or emailing jccih@jccih.org.

Golf tournament helps nonprofits

Mauna Kea Resort’s 50th anniversary giving campaign, 50 Acts of Aloha, recently raised $4,900, resulting in donations of $1,635 to three Big Island-based nonprofits.

Receiving donations from the resort’s inaugural Big Island Bites Golf Tournament at Hapuna Golf Course are the Mauna Kea Forest Restoration Project, Make-a-Wish Hawaii and Kona-Kohala ACF’s “Equip the Kitchens” campaign for West Hawaii Community College-Palamanui.

Radio station receives boost

The North Kohala Community Resource Center received a $25,000 grant from the Cooke Foundation to support the new Kohala radio station.

“We are grateful for the support from Cooke Foundation, which will fund much-needed first-year operational costs for our community radio station, Kohala Radio,” said Christine Richardson, North Kohala Community Resource Center executive director.

The station will begin broadcasting this month on 96.1 FM. Learn more at knkr.org.
